Would America Elect Moses?
by Pastor Matthew E. Walker, 31 October 2008
If the greatest human leader of all time were
running for president he would probably poll somewhere above the
unknown Prohibitionist Party candidate and below Bob Barr, the
Libertarian’s choice. That leader was Moses. His accomplishments
include reigning in a rabscrabble people, besting the superpower
nation of his day, leading this hoard into the wilderness with
few provisions, developing their legal and economic systems, enhancing
their cultural awareness, creating the framework for their future
society, and raising an army capable of destroying any other army
on the face of the earth (including any army that exists today).
Yet with all of Moses’ accomplishments
he faced a constant questioning of his leadership from the people,
challenges to his leadership from his own brother and sister,
and one coup attempt so serious that God had to directly intervene
as two men led a rebellion against Moses both politically and
spiritually. Putting this into our modern day context: the opposition
campaign slogan might have been something like: “after eight
years of Moses, who is in for another thirty-four?”
That leads me to wonder if it is ever possible
for America to elect someone truly capable of being a great president.
I rather doubt it. The news media continually remind me by publishing
the myriad polls that while I have a right and responsibility
to vote that there are millions of others who have a completely
different value system who also have that right and plan to vote
against righteousness any time they have opportunity. I can’t
out-vote the godless.
How comforting it is then to remember that God
appoints men to positions of power, not the people. King David
knew this. He wrote in Psalm 75:6-7
For promotion cometh neither from the east,
nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he
puts down one, and sets up another. God ordained Moses
to lead Israel out of Egypt. He will ordain the next president
of the United States too. That is what God does.
Unless something unprecedented happens, which
would include the loss of both major party candidates, our next
president will not be a Christian man. Neither of the two give
any evidence of being a Bible-believing disciple of Jesus Christ.
Yet the fact remains that God uses ungodly rulers to accomplish
his purposes. Remember what Jesus said to Pilate just before being
sentenced to be crucified. John
19:11 Jesus
answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except
it were given thee from above
. . . God’s power will not be lessened by the results
of this election. He is still in control of everything.
Another pastor, Jeremiah Wright, has notoriously
prayed for God to damn America. God may do that. I am glad to
know however that if this nation is to fall away and the blessed
years are behind us it will not happen because a man named John
McCain lost or one an election. Instead, it will happen because
it fits into the plan of God. Let us remember the words of David
in a time of trouble and take comfort. 2
Samuel 24:14 And
David said…I am in a great strait: let us fall now into
the hand of the Lord; for his mercies are great: and let me not
fall into the hand of man.
